Gastric surgery

The only reliable option if
you want to shed pounds and
keep it hat way is Gastric
bypass surgery. Dieting, calorie
burning by aerobic activities,
doing weights etc.
sure may help but they have serious
limitation. In most cases those who
have experienced weight reduction
by dieting, aerobics etc. have seen
that the weight loss
is temporary. The main reason for this
obesity malady can be given in one
single word, FOOD. We are now being
surrounded with food everywhere, food that is
packaged, fast, instant and rich. Food
has become cheaper and we have more
money & time. Food has become an
addiction and we crave for increasing
quantity of food to satisfy our appetite.

The only way to reduce weight is to reduce our
food intake on a consistent basis and gastric
bypass surgery has been considered as the only
viable way to reduce
food intake. Gastric bypass surgery makes the
stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part
of the small intestine. You will feel full more
quickly than when your
stomach was its original size, which reduces the
amount of food you eat and thus the calories
consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also
results in fewer calories
being absorbed. This leads to weight loss.
There
are different types of Gastric bypass
surgeries like Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
and laparoscopic gastric bypass etc.

In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the stomach is made
smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the
stomach using surgical staples or a plastic band.
The smaller
stomach is connected directly to the middle
portion of the small intestine (jejunum),
bypassing the rest of the stomach and the
upper portion of the small intestine
(duodenum). This procedure can be done by
making a large incision in the abdomen
(an open procedure) or by making a small
incision and using small instruments
and a camera to guide the surgery.

In other type of Gastric surgery, the
laparoscopic gastric bypass, surgical
instruments are inserted through small
cut rather than a large one. Recovery
is faster in this
type of surgery with lower risk of hernia
and scarring as compared to traditional
Gastric bypass surgery. Patient's immune
function is also maintained with
laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, whereas
open surgery can reduce the immune system
and even accelerate the growth of any
existing tumors. Other normal
complications of bowel obstruction and
leaks should be discussed with your physician.

The mortality risk with the GBP in expert
centers appears to be quite high. The two
most common causes of death after a gastric
bypass surgery are anastomotic
leak and pulmonary embolism. The operation
has a mortality rate of approximately 2%
overall: 1% suffer immediate complications
and death, another 1% will
commonly have post-operative complications
that lead to death within one month of surgery.
This can be mitigated by compliance with the
surgeon's post-operative
plan and using a doctor who has performed
more than 200 procedures. A full 25% of
people undergoing this operation will have
some form of post-operative
complication (hernia, gall stones) either
requiring a further procedure or change
in habits. In some instances, the normal
production of intrinsic factor in the stomach
wall to aid in vitamin B12 absorption is
decreased. This may call for either B12
injections or sub-lingual tablets for
life to aid in the breakdown of food for energy.

Gastric bypass surgery diet: There will
be weight reduction after surgery. You'll
lose lot of flab and of excess weight during
the first year after your operation but
stringent post gastric bypass diet norms have
to be maintained. You will be required to
modify your eating and exercise patterns to
make sure that you do not gain
back weight. Your eating pattern will anyway
should be changed to prevent pain and vomiting.
Monitoring your diet will also be required to
protect your surgical
procedure - staple line, and prevent food from
blocking the opening from the stomach to the
gastrointestinal tract. If you eat beyond a
limit you will fall sick. The
amount of space in your stomach is so small
so you cannot eat and drink simultaneously.
On the whole if you follow the Gastric
bypass diet you can expect loose
as much as 80% of your excess body weight.

You can also consider non a new type of Gastric
bypass pill developed by a California,
